Session One Class Descriptions

Justice and Faith

Led by Rabbi Andrea Goldstein

October 18, 25 | November 1

The call to justice is an eternal call in Judaism, which has been felt in especially profound ways during recent months and years. Using excerpts from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s book, The Prophets, we will explore the ways in which our prophets wove their faith into their mandates for justice and see how their ancient teachings still apply to our world today.

Learn Hebrew and More

Led by Cantor Seth Warner and Marci Thal

October 18, 25 | November 1, 8, 15

This Hebrew class will continue learning prayers, liturgy and some modern Hebrew. The class is open to students who know the alef-bet and can read. Students may choose to be a part of the adult Bar/Bat mitzvah service. If you’re interested, but not sure if you have all the skills, contact Cantor Warner.

Fees: $125 for members, $160 for non-members (plus small materials fee)

Covers sessions one and two

iEngage: The Legacy of the Past and the Challenges of the Future

Led by Rabbi Jim Bennett

October 18, 25 | November 1, 8, 15

This innovative new course explores the pivotal events of 1947 and 1967 – following the 1917 Balfour Declaration – as key moments when Zionism unleashed new thinking about the meaning of Jewishness for generations to come. Through video lectures, text study and group discussion, we are bringing the world-renowned faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute into our Shaare Emeth community. Each session includes text study and discussion led by Rabbi Bennett, enhanced by video lectures by Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, and video dialogues between Rabbi Hartman and other top scholars and experts.

Fees: $50 for members, $75 for non-members

Covers sessions one and two
