Chanukah, translated from Hebrew as “dedication,” is a week-long, joyous celebration of freedom commemorating the Maccabees’ victory over the oppressive Syrian army in 165 B.C.E. and the subsequent rededication of the Temple. Today we celebrate by lighting the candles of the chanukiah (the special Chanukah menorah), eating foods cooked in oil such as latkes and jelly doughnuts, and singing and playing special songs and games.
