As Reform Jews we are engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam, of repairing our world. Our passion for social justice is reflected in the ancient words of our prophets and sages and in the words of our Torah. “Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof” we are commanded. “Justice, justice shall you pursue!” Why is the word “justice” repeated twice in this verse? Our tradition explains that the word “justice” appears twice to teach us that as we must pursue justice in the private sphere, we must pursue justice in the public sphere as well. As people of faith we have a mandate to bring our values into the public arena and we are proud that we devote our time advocating for many of the social justice values in which we believe.
